Submission to Senate Inquiry into WHO Social Determinants of Health Report

This document is a submission made in 2012 by the APS to the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs Inquiry into Australia's domestic response to the World Health Organization's (WHO) Commission on Social Determinants of Health Report ‘Closing the gap within a generation’.

This submission draws specifically on relevant evidence from the field of community psychology. Community psychology takes as its central tenet understanding the integration and interdependence of the person within their social and community context.

The APS endorses the WHO Social Determinants of Health approach, acknowledging the social gradient in health and recognising the contribution of social determinants to unequal health outcomes.

Furthermore, the APS fully supports the recommendations contained in the WHO’s ’Closing the gap within a generation’ report.
