APS welcomes continuation of funding for mental health services

The APS today welcomed the announcement of continued funding for mental health services.

Today’s announcement by the Federal Health Minister, Sussan Ley MP, that a 12-month extension of funding has been granted to a large number of Australia’s community-based mental health services provides certainty.

“Speaking on behalf of Australian psychologists, I welcome the Government’s announcement today,” said APS Executive Director, Professor Lyn Littlefield OAM.

“This announcement gives reassurance of continued services to people with mental health disorders, who rely on support from mental health programs, which are dependent on Federal funding. The announcement also provides some financial certainty to mental health practitioners, who provide treatment and care,” Professor Littlefield said.

“Funding certainty for mental health services is vital because mental health issues among Australians are widespread. People need to know from one day to the next whether they will have access to the help they need, which in many cases is life-saving,” said Professor Littlefield.

The APS also welcomes the Government’s confirmation today that it will release the report on the Review of Mental Health Programs and Services soon. The APS looks forward to the report’s publication to enable broad public discussion and consultation on its findings.
