Webinar (Live) Event

Interpersonal intimacy post stroke: mechanisms underlying low mood

Overview

This WA College of Clinical Neuropsychologists webinar is designed to provide a deeper understanding of the multifaceted concept of intimacy as underpinning the low mood that can occur in stroke recovery. Participants will explore various forms of intimacy—emotional, experiential, intellectual, and beyond—highlighting how these domains are impacted by the cognitive, physical, and functional challenges following a stroke.

Key themes include:

  • The effects of stroke on cognitive functioning, physical abilities, and valued activities resulting in a loss of interpersonal intimacy across multiple domains.
  • Understanding and addressing the sense of isolation and low mood stemming from lost intimate connections.
  • Caregiving versus intimacy.
  • Addressing sexual functioning post-stroke as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:

  1. Understand the multifaceted nature of intimate relationships in our patients lives.
  2. Consider the cognitive, caregiving, functional and physical reasons for reduced intimacy as then underpinning a presenting problem of low mood or depression.
  3. Develop greater confidence in addressing sexual functioning and sexual intimacy with clients as part of a multidisciplinary team.
