Resourcing Resilience

Overview

The Bundaberg-Hervey Bay branch of the APS is pleased to present 'Resourcing Resilience', a full day presentation on child mental health and wellbeing. Featuring presentations from highly regarded local psychologists Dr Julie Hodges, Hardeep Kaur, and Skye Anderson, the day will feature a smorgasbord of recent research outcomes, theory informed frameworks, and practical strategies to support your practice, whether as psychologist, educator, or allied health professional. Also sharing will be mindfulness coach John Shearer of Saffron Sounds who will host a meditation for us with sonic resonance for soothing mind and body. We hope this day will nurture your passion and inform your practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:

  • Reference the theories underpinning child mental wellbeing, specifically Brofenbrenner's bioecological systems theory and models of neurobiology.
  • Have a greater awareness of the current evidence base of effective interventions for good child mental health.
  • Have access to and awareness of free training and resources that can be intergrated into your practice and shared with the parents and community surrounding children.
  • Have a greater understanding of how to respond to and manage eating disorders and associated risks.
  • Have a greater understanding of the best-practice supports for neurodiverse children.

About the presenter(s)

Dr. Julie Hodges is a Research Fellow at the Parenting and Family Support Centre, School of Psychology at the University of Queensland. Her research activities draw on her background as a clinical psychologist, a teacher and a parenting educator. She has conducted research focused on the wellbeing and self-regulatory capacity of children and adolescents and the influence that a working relationship between schools and families can have on young people’s educational and wellbeing outcomes and teacher wellbeing. Julie has coordinated large-scale, longitudinal research projects and her research has attracted grants from the Queensland Government and The University of Queensland. Most recently, Julie recently held the position of National Project Manager the Thriving Kids and Parents Schools Project funded of Australian Government Department of Education Emerging Priorities Program Julie was previously a Chief Investigator in the Principal Leadership for Parent-School-Community Engagement (2016–2020) research.

Hardeep Kaur is a local psychologist who achieved her Master's of Professional Psychology Practice in 2017 for the Cairnmillar Institute School of Psychology and Counselling. Hardeep has worked at the Child and Youth Mental Health Service for over six years managing the care of children and adolescents with eating disorders. Hardeep is passionate about increasing the skill and confidence of the psychology workforce to respond to eating disorders. She has a warm and patient demeanour and is skilled at engaging families in crisis. When not working, Hardeep enjoys time with her children and walking her Great Dane, Rosie. 

Skye Anderson is a psychologist with ten years’ experience providing psychological assessment and treatment within private practice. Her areas of special interest include diagnostic assessments, neurodiverse conditions, management of persistent pain, LGBTQIA+, couples counselling, and anxiety related disorders. Skye has recently launched her own private practice, Bright Day Psychology, a name that reflects Skye’s positive and strengths-based approach.

Notes

Registration includes three presentations, a guided meditation, lunch, morning and afternoon tea.

This event is aimed at psychologists, educators, and allied health professionals.
