Pain management in practice

Overview

Pain management in practice Training Package inclusions:

  1. Access to a 7-hour self-paced online pre-learning platform to complete three fundamental topics (Explaining Pain, Communication strategies and Sleep Management). Includes 3 month access to 3 Online Courses
  2. A full-day interactive in-person or online workshop to expand and apply a range of effective pain management strategies. Face to face and online live and interactive options are available.

Master your skills in managing clients with complex and chronic pain conditions to help them achieve their full potential.

This workshop is designed to challenge and extend your skills to manage clients with pain to achieve significant functional outcomes in all domains of their life. 

The workshop has a very strong practical focus to ensure you are able to implement the strategies into your working day. 

Presented by a psychologist and physiotherapist who are experts in the management of complex and chronic pain conditions utilising an integrated presentation style. 

Small group work is undertaken to allow time to practice new skills and numbers are strictly limited to ensure the workshop is highly interactive. 

Participants include a range of health professionals and return to work professionals, enabling discussion and development of skills from a range of perspectives. 

Once again in 2025, there will be an option to attend the workshop online or face to face.

Online training is live and interactive and includes powerpoint presentations, video and whiteboard share functions, Q & A sessions, chat functions and role play in virtual breakout rooms.

Learning Outcomes

  • a further understanding of why pain can persist, including neuroplasticity and central sensitisation, and how to effectively educate your clients
  • pain conditions including musculoskeletal pain, cancer pain, pain as part of other health conditions will be discussed
  • skills to better identify the "hidden" barriers through a more comprehensive assessment process
  • a framework of treatment options for clients with ongoing pain
  • goals that your client is motivated to achieve
  • novel graded exposure plans to address fear avoidant behaviours, addressing physical and psychological factors to moving with pain
  • sleep strategies to improve disrupted sleep
  • specific CBT and ACT techniques to address pain
  • practical strategies to address a client who is ‘stuck’ and help with behaviour change
  • techniques to more effectively address challenging communication issues when dealing with resistance and how to manage difficult conversations

About the presenter(s)

Jacqui and Nick have delivered this Pain Management in Practice workshop since 2006. They have reviewed the evidence and integrated feedback to continually refine the delivery of this workshop to small groups of clinicians and return to work professionals around Australia. Their integrated presentation style allows participants to be engaged and enhances the richness of the learning experience.
Jacqui and Nick work clinically at Empower Rehab, a clinic specialising in the management of complex and chronic pain conditions, located in Bellfield, Melbourne. They have both been invited to present at the Australian Pain Society conference, been invited speakers to a series of WorkCover Employer Networks and have had papers accepted to present at the Australian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine and Australian Physiotherapy Association conferences as well as presenting at webinars, seminars and panel forums around Australia on best practice pain management.
Dr Jacqui Stanford is a health psychologist who has specialised in pain management and integrating psychology within this field for her entire career. She has been the Australian Psychological Society representative to the National Pain Summit since its inception and currently consults to WorkSafe Victoria as a Psychology and Pain Management advisor.
Nick is an APA titled Pain Physiotherapist who has focused on the management of complex and persistent pain for over 30 years. He has also previously worked as an Occupational Rehabilitation consultant and as an Injury Management Advisor for a large self insured employer.
