Overview

Eating Disorder Core Skills: eLearning for Mental Health Professionals is comprehensive foundational eating disorder training developed specifically for mental health professionals. 

It will provide key information needed to identify and respond when a person is experiencing an eating disorder, refer to appropriate services in the stepped system of care for eating disorders, and understand the pathway to eating disorder treatment and recovery

The training builds on the knowledge gained from undergraduate and postgraduate psychology courses to comprehensively cover the importance of early recognition and intervention when a person is experiencing an eating disorder, conducting screening and completing a comprehensive eating disorder assessment, the stepped system of care for eating disorders, medical and psychiatric risk associated eating disorders, the importance of working in a multidisciplinary care team, engaging family and supports, and providing ongoing recovery support to a person experiencing an eating disorder.

The training is a five-hour, self-paced, interactive online training that includes practical real-life scenarios and activities, videos from leaders in the field and people with a lived experience of an eating disorder, up to date resources and a formal assessment.

Eating Disorder Core Skills: eLearning for Mental Health Professionals consists of five modules:

  1. Key features of early identification (clinical features, prevalence, impact, risk factors and warning signs),

  2. Initial response (engagement, screening and screening tools, comprehensive eating disorder assessment, and diagnosis),

  3. Shared care (stepped system of care for eating disorders, multidisciplinary care team, family and supports, and continuity of care),

  4. Treatment (mental health treatment, medical care, nutrition support and stepping up care), and

  5. Recovery support (relapse prevention and response, long-term eating disorders and navigating the end of treatment). 

The training has been developed by clinicians including psychologists, with extensive expertise and experience in the eating disorder field. It includes up to date, evidence-based research, and incorporates the perspectives of people with lived experience of an eating disorder.

Target audience

The training is relevant to mental health professionals including psychologists, social workers, mental health nurses, nurse practitioners, occupational therapists, psychotherapists, counsellors, general practitioners, and psychiatrists.

Level of Learning

Intermediate. This activity is targeted to those who have some previous learning on the topic.

APS CPD-Approved

This eLearning activity has been assessed against the APS Standards for CPD activities and approved for its education quality.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this training, participants should be able to:

1. Key features for early identification

  • describe the current diagnostic criteria, clincial features, progression, and impact of eating disorders,

  • identify warning signs associated with eating disorders, and

  • describe the importance of early intervention for eating disorders.

2. Initial response

  • determine if a person may be at risk of an eating disorder using appropriate screening tools, and

  • assess a person with an eating disorder by completing a comprehensive assessment of children, adolescents, and adults.

3. Shared care

  • determine the appropriate services, supports, and resources for a person experiencing an eating disorder across a stepped system of care, and complete necessary referrals,

  • describe the role of families and supports in eating disorder treatment and recovery, and 

  • organise or engage with the care team for a person experiencing an eating disorder.

4. Treatment

  • describe mental health treatment for a person experiencing an eating disorder including the treatment process and components of effective treatment,

  • describe the range of evidence-based treatment models for eating disorders, and

  • describe the medical care and nutrition support required for a person experiencing an eating disorder.

5. Recovery support

  • determine the ongoing recovery support required for a person experiencing or who has experienced an eating disorder, and

  • identify the signs of relapse in a person experiencing or who has experienced an eating disorder and provide appropriate support.

Notes

This training has been approved by NEDC as meeting the requirement of training in introduction to eating disorders for health professionals as required for the ANZAED Eating Disorder Credential. IMPORTANT: The training is not treatment provision training, and will not provide psychologists with the knowledge and skills to provide eating disorder treatment. This message is articulated throughout the training and clinicians are provided with guidance to further training and continuing professional development to support them in providing safe and effective treatment for people experiencing eating disorders.

National Eating Disorders Collaboration

The National Eating Disorders Collaboration (NEDC) is an initiative of the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care. NEDC is dedicated to developing and implementing a nationally consistent, evidence-based system of care for the prevention and treatment of eating disorders. NEDC is a national collaborative platform for experts in lived experience, clinical services, and research to generate unified, evidence-based sector positions and consistent national standards that are translated into practical action for prevention, identification, and treatment.
