APS welcomes Federal Government’s telehealth commitment

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) welcomes the Federal Health Minister’s announcement that telehealth will become a permanent part of the Medicare system.

In response to the pandemic and the bushfire crisis of 2019-20, the Federal Government earlier this year acted on the APS’ calls for telehealth psychology sessions to be made available under Medicare.

APS President Tamara Cavenett said the APS is looking forward to working with government on permanently integrating Medicare-subsidised telehealth psychology sessions into Australia’s mental health system.

“Australians have benefited greatly from telehealth services after a horrific bushfire season and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The APS applauds the Federal Government’s commitment to telehealth as a pivotal part of health care reform,” said Ms Cavenett.

“This year, 94 per cent of psychologists have adopted telehealth, and the convenience, flexibility and accessibility it offers Australians has been invaluable.”

“The recent Productivity Commission report into mental health found mental ill-health and suicide cost Australia at least $200 billion a year.”

“Subsidising telehealth through Medicare is a vital tool for psychologists to increase access to Australians who need help, particularly when face-to-face sessions aren’t possible or a barrier to care.”

“The APS looks forward to continuing to work with the Department of Health and the Federal Government on these future plans for telehealth.”
