Australia's psychologists welcome long overdue NDIS funding boost

Australia's psychologists welcome long overdue NDIS funding boost

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) has welcomed news of an $850 million increase to National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provider payments, saying it would ultimately improve access to psychological services for Australians living with disabilities.

CEO of the APS Ms Frances Mirabelli said the Federal Government’s announcement of a 1 July increase to payments for allied health workers in the NDIS, including psychologists, would be positive for both providers and consumers.

“All Australians deserve access to psychological services, and this includes people who are living with a disability,” said Ms Mirabelli.

“Under the current NDIS pricing model, it has been incredibly challenging for psychologists to provide services to people living with disabilities, a situation we have long been concerned about as a profession.

“Particularly in regional, rural and remote areas it has become increasingly difficult for NDIS participants to access a psychologist.

“By remunerating psychologists and other allied health appropriately, we are likely to see an increased flow of these providers to these more needy communities.

Ms Mirabelli said the work of psychologists was hugely beneficial to many people receiving treatment under the NDIS.

“Psychologists have expert skills and knowledge in working with people with disabilities, such as helping people with autism, managing social skills problems, managing difficult behaviours, and psycho-social disabilities.

“This pay increase will go a long way in recognising the important role of psychologists working with clients with disabilities.

“We look forward to receiving further details about this funding and will work with our members to ensure they are equipped with the information and resources they need to operate
under this change.”
