Overview

Psychologists play an essential role in supporting, treating and educating patients through their return to work journey. 

The ReturnToWorkPsych eLearning activity, provides psychologists with the skills, tools, and knowledge, to help guide and progress their clients towards recovery and their transition back to work sooner. It includes a simple and practical framework for psychologists in assessing the work capacity of people with a psychological condition, how to employ a psychosocial approach and empower clients for best outcomes.

ReturntoWorkPsych consists of the following modules:

  1. The health benefits of work,

  2. The Return to Work Scheme,

  3. Framework for assessing capacity,

  4. Using a biopsychosocial approach,

  5. Helping your patient/client recover at work, and

  6. Resources and references.

Target audience

The activity is targeted to mental health professionals including psychologists of all career stages, accredited mental health social workers, mental health nurses, nurse practitioners, occupational therapists, psychotherapists, counsellors, psychiatrists, human resource professionals, and general practitioners.

Level of Learning

Foundational. This activity is targeted to those new to the topic.

APS CPD-Approved

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this training, participants should be able to:

  • explain the health benefits of work and the impacts of psychosocial factors on return to work,

  • employ the Clinical Framework for the Delivery of Health Services,

  • work effectively with the claims team, return to work coordinator, and patient’s employer, and

  • use a framework for assessing capacity and a biopsychosocial approach when treating clients.
