Presentation - seminar Event

Helping Psychologists Navigate the Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) followed by Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)

Overview

The morning presentation by Dr Tania Gibbie, Clinical Psychologist along with Louise Groves, Provider Specialist will be covering the following:

  • Overview of the TAC and its history.
  • Discuss the benefits and complexities of a compensation system.
  • Overview of the structure of the claims process.
  • Review the TAC Clinical Framework and Mental Health Treatment Plan.
  • Demystify the role of the TAC Clinical Panel.
  • Provide some case study examples.

The after-lunch presentation by Dr Nathan Castle, Clinical Psychologist will be covering the following:

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the most effective individual CBT intervention in a Psychologist’s toolbox with 80% of clients improving. One in ten people experience insomnia in Australia and one in two clients experience insomnia in clinical settings. Despite this, few referrers suggest CBT-I and few clients seek it out.

Nathan’s presentation will provide the core therapy skills to integrate CBT-I into your current work including Stimulus Control, Sleep Restriction, Cognitive Therapy, and Sleep Hygiene without necessarily telling all clients to simply get off their phones (there’s no therapy that seems to work for this yet).

Both Tania and Nathan will be bringing their clinical expertise to inform us on how to support our clients for better client outcomes.

About the presenter(s)

Dr Tania Gibbie is a Clinical Psychologist who has been a Clinical Advisor to the TAC for 8 years and is the TAC Clinical Panel lead for mental health. The role of the Clinical Panel is to liaise with treating health professionals to optimise recovery for clients injured in a motor vehicle accident in Victoria. Tania has worked extensively with people experiencing chronic pain in both Public and Private hospitals. Tania is also a train-the-trainer for the Mindfulness Training Institute - Australia and New Zealand. Tania teaches Mindfulness-based Cognitive therapy (MBCT) to clients experiencing relapsing depression, as well as a network psychologist for the AFL. Dr Nathan Castle is a Clinical Psychologist and Director of Psychology Outcomes and Co-Director of Psychs in Schools. In 2019, Nathan developed and ran Barwon Health’s Sleep Group Program alongside Meghan Odgers (Psychologist). The Sleep Group Program has continued to successfully run for the last 5 years. The benefits of CBT-I showed that clients who had an average of 4 hours of sleep for 20 years were able to increase their sleep to over 6 hours within only six weeks. Psychology Outcomes in Highton have continued the tradition of effective sleep treatments and provide CBT-I support to all clients that present with mental health and sleep difficulties.
