We are pleased to announce the Newcastle Branch committee have organised an upcoming in-person presentation on Schema Therapy Foundations for Early Career Psychologists.

Presenter Ruth Holt returns by popular demand after presenting this workshop for APS last year in Newcastle. Join us at the fabulous Noah's on the Beach for an enjoyable day of learning with Ruth, who is a warm and engaging presenter.

This introductory workshop is aimed at those who are interested in working with Complex Trauma presentations and “treatment-resistant' clients.

Schema Therapy is an evidence-based treatment for clients presenting with symptoms consistent with borderline personality disorder and provides the therapist with powerful tools for working with difficult in session behaviours, including difficulty connecting with a therapist, chronically avoidant behaviour, and the long-term impacts of trauma.

This training aims to introduce the theory and techniques in Schema Therapy with an emphasis on borderline personality disorder. This interactive workshop will provide opportunities to watch live demonstrations, reflect on your own clients and step by step guides to the interventions outlined.

Targeted audience

This workshop will appeal to psychologists and psychologists students who are interested in learning the fundamentals of Schema Therapy.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:

• have an understanding of the 4 origins of Schemas and schema maintenance processes,
• an overview of the Mode Model, and
• an understanding and experience of two key Schema Therapy interventions.

Ruth Holt

About the presenter(s)

Ruth Holt is a Clinical Psychologist and Principal of Canberra Clinical and Forensic Psychology. She is a Certified Schema Therapist and Supervisor/Trainer in both Couples and Individuals and has competed training in Emotion-focused Therapy and Gottman Method Couple Therapy. She works with individuals and couples with a range of presentations and conducts training in Schema Therapy, couples therapy, women's mental health and abuse in relationships. She has presented webinars and workshops for the Australian Psychological Society on Schema Therapy; Couples work and therapist self-reflection. She has presented internationally, including at the International Society of Schema Therapy and runs workshops throughout Australia, including self-reflective workshops for therapists. She has worked with The University of Canberra Psychology Clinic supervising and presenting for postgraduate students. Ruth has edited the book Schema Therapy for Children and Adolescents and has recently published on Schemas and Intimate Partner Violence. She consults with organisations on responses to abuse and conducts strengths building workshops for couples.
