The APS Interest Group on Psychology and Ageing invites submissions for the Elsie Harwood Award.

The award was established to recognise the pioneer work of Dr Elsie Harwood in psychological research with older people. The award aims to raise awareness in the field of psychology and ageing and to encourage students to carry out research in this field. The award is for the best empirical research project in the field of ageing, submitted as part of an accredited fourth year program in psychology or an accredited Masters by coursework program in psychology.

Administration

  1. The Elsie Harwood Award is the responsibility of the Psychology and Ageing Interest Group, who will also fund the Award.  
  2. The Convener of the Psychology and Ageing Interest Group will appoint a selection committee of at least two members of the Interest Group to be responsible for recommending an appropriate Award recipient to the Board.
  3. Supervisors of projects entered for the Award will not be eligible to serve as members of the selection committee.
  4. The Award will be presented at either the Society’s Annual Conference or at the biennial national meeting of the Psychology and Ageing Interest Group, and the successful candidate will be announced in InPsych.

Eligibility

  1. Nominees need not be members of the Society.
  2. Students, who in the period since the previous Award was made, have completed a fourth year theoretical essay or empirical research project or an applied Masters coursework thesis in the field of ageing, submitted as part of the requirements of an APAC accredited fourth year program in psychology or a postgraduate program, are eligible for nomination for the Award.

Nomination process

  1. A call for nominations for the Elsie Harwood Award should:
    1. be advertised in InPsych;
    2. be provided to the Heads of Department of each tertiary institution with APAC accredited fourth year programs that has independent membership of the Australian ViceChancellors’ Committee.
  2. Nominations should begin with a cover page showing the title, the name of the student, the name of the institution and a statement signed by the supervisor certifying that the work has been carried out by the student as part of an APAC accredited fourth year program.  
  3. Nominations should not exceed 2000 words and should include a literature review, the research questions and hypotheses that were examined, method, results, discussion and references.
  4. An electronic copy of the nomination should be submitted to the APS Member Groups Administrator on behalf of the Convener of the Psychology and Ageing Interest Group.

Selection criteria

In judging the nominations for the Elsie Harwood Award, the selections committee will have regard to:

  1. the scientific merit of the study;
  2. the study’s contribution to theory and/or practice in the field of psychology and ageing;
  3. the fact that the essay or project must be about ageing but does not necessarily have to involve human participants; and
  4. the academic standard of the work.

Value of the award

Successful candidates for the Elsie Harwood Award will:

  1. receive an award of $500;
  2. receive student registration for the forthcoming Annual Conference of the Society or the biennial national meeting of the Psychology and Ageing Interest Group, according to the student’s preference; and
  3. receive a return economy airfare for the forthcoming Annual Conference of the Society or the biennial national meeting of the Psychology and Ageing Interest Group if the candidate is required to travel interstate to attend the conference and;
  4. be presented with a certificate.
