Overview

This three-hour online masterclass will explore the application of Internal Family Systems therapy to eating disorders and disordered eating. Drawing on Richard Schwartz’s early clinical work in the eating disorder field and Jeanne Catanzaro’s development of the Unburdened Eating approach.

The masterclass will include didactic teaching, opportunities for participant questions and discussion, and analysis of a prerecorded clinical demonstration highlighting key interventions and clinical decision points. It is intended for mental health professionals who already have some familiarity with IFS and eating-disorder presentations and are seeking a more focused and advanced exploration of this area.

Recommended preparatory reading

Dr. Jeanne Catanzaro’s “Unburdened Eating” is recommended optional reading for participants who wish to undertake additional preparation before the masterclass. This optional resource will not be provided to registrants.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to:

• Explain how the IFS model conceptualises eating-disorder symptoms and protective parts.
• Identify common polarities and protective dynamics that arise when working with eating disorders.
• Apply IFS principles to support safety, pacing and therapeutic engagement.
• Analyse a clinical demonstration and identify key therapist interventions and decision points.

About the presenter(s)

Richard C. Schwartz, PhD, is the creator of the Internal Family Systems model and Founder of the IFS Institute. He is a Teaching Associate in Psychiatry at Cambridge Health Alliance, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, and has authored or co-authored more than ten books, including No Bad Parts and Internal Family Systems Therapy. His work has contributed to the international development of IFS as a non pathologising approach to understanding and treating psychological distress.

Jeanne Catanzaro, PhD, is a clinical psychologist with more than 25 years of experience treating disordered eating and trauma. Her clinical background includes psychodynamic psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing®, EMDR and Internal Family Systems therapy. Jeanne is known for her compassionate understanding of the internal, relational and cultural dynamics that contribute to difficult relationships with food and the body. She is an approved IFS consultant, Vice President of the IFS Institute and the author of Unburdened Eating.

Target Audience

This event is intended for mental health professionals with some familiarity with IFS who work with, or have an interest in, eating disorders and disordered eating.

• A post-event email will be sent within two weeks of the event’s completion to each registrant’s registered email address. This email will include the CPD certificate, event-recording, and any additional resources shared during the session.

Duration of Access

This event will be recorded. The recording will be emailed to all registered within 2 weeks post event and available for viewing up to 90 days

CPD

It is up to attendees to assess and determine how learning from this event aligns with the requirements of their learning plan. The providers accordingly do not make any representation that the event counts towards attendees’ CPD learning requirements.
