ACCEPTANCE & COMMITMENT THERAPY (ACT) – AN EXPERIENTIAL INTRODUCTION

Format Workshop
Presenters Simone Fischer
Description

ACT is considered the ‘third wave’ of behavioural therapies. ACT is also one of the more recent mindfulness based therapies. ACT’s ultimate aim is to create a meaningful life by acting on ones values, whilst accepting the difficulties and resultant anguish that inevitably come along the way. Furthermore, ACT does not focus on symptom reduction of this resultant pain, but has the view that attempts to get rid of symptoms can strengthen psychological distress. The ACT model thus aims at increasing psychological flexibility, by learning to ‘stand back’ from unhelpful thoughts and uncomfortable feelings rather than attempting to control or avoid them. Workshop participants will be introduced to ACT exercises and strategies that they can apply to their own lives, including being aware of how they could integrate these tools into their clinical practise.
