PsyBA Master class: Building supervisee skills in self-evaluation and reflective practice

Event number: 19249
6.5 CPD hours
APS Institute CPD
Presenter(s): Dr Matthew Berry

This master class will address the principles, frameworks/models and skills of reflective practice in supervision and strategies to build supervisee skills of self-evaluation and reflection. The workshop discussions will differentiate reflective supervision from more typical expert consultant/problem solving supervision. It will also reflect upon different supervision inputs, such as giving and receiving feedback, and applying reflective practice to personal, ethical and professional issues, in the supervisory relationship and the supervisee’s practice.  Participants will learn and explore ways in which they can apply reflective practice and relationship skills with the supervisee in the planning, implementation and evaluation of supervision programs.  Taking an experiential learning approach and working in small groups, participants will have the opportunity to discuss, role-play and receive feedback and support from their peers to build their confidence and skill in the management of scenarios and issues in supervision that they will be invited to bring with them to the workshop.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Match appropriate supervision frameworks used in reflective supervision processes to the supervisee’s developmental stage
  • Adapt the inputs and processes used in reflective supervision to match the goals and learning style of the supervisee
  • Outline different supervision inputs used to facilitate reflective supervision
  • Demonstrate skills in reflective supervision using at least two different reflective lenses
  • Demonstrate skills to help the supervisee to reflect upon therapist attitudes and values that impact their work, with sensitively and with appropriate boundaries
  • Demonstrate skills to improve self-evaluation and reflective practices of supervisees
  • Identify changes to their current supervision practices to improve reflective and self-evaluation training for the supervisee

Master class, Part 4 has been developed for psychologists who want to maintain their status as a Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA)-approved supervisor (principal or secondary). Psychologists who are not currently a PsyBA-approved supervisor can use this workshop for general CPD purposes, but cannot use this workshop to gain supervisor approval.
