Pain Management in Practice: the role of the psychologist and neuroplasticity

Event number: 17366
14 CPD hours
Workshop
Presenter(s): Dr Jacqui Stanford (health psychologist) and Nick Economos (physiotherapist)

Pain Managment in Practice is an advanced pain management workshop designed to help you, as a psychologist, extend the practical strategies you can utilise to help your client with a chronic pain condition achieve their goals. Pain conditions including musculoskeletal pain, cancer pain, and pain as part of other health conditions will be discussed. By developing a comprehensive formulation of the presenting issues, not simply the diagnosis, you will be able to extend your skills to target the interaction between mood issues and pain and its impact on function.

The workshop provides an overview to the current understanding of pain, including the role of neuroplasticity. The workshop focuses on addressing the challenges of setting goals when clients feel hopeless, how to work with a client’s anxiety and fears relating to moving with pain, adapting CBT and ACT strategies to facilitate behaviour change in a complex pain client and practical sleep management strategies when pain is a barrier to refreshing sleep.  It will improve your knowledge of pain medication.

The workshop extends your skills as a psychologist to develop secondary formulations when a client’s progress is stalling in order to develop a new treatment plan. The effective management of the therapeutic process will be addressed in order to enhance the client’s recovery.

The workshop utilises an integrated biopsychosocial approach, delivered throughout the day by a psychologist and physiotherapist who are experts in managing clients with a range of complex and chronic pain conditions.

Numbers are strictly limited to ensure your active involvement in the workshop. The presenters’ approachable and interactive style will allow your individual learning needs to be met in order to extend your own clinical practice.
