Call for Expressions of Interest

This Call for Expressions of Interest will remain open for fourteen (14) days and closes at 5:00pm on Tuesday 3 October 2017 (AEDT).

A Call for Expressions of Interest by the Society to Honorary Fellows and Fellows who are members of one or more APS Divisions, to serve on the recently created Nominations Committee of the APS Board of Directors, is now being made.

The need and desirability for a Nominations Committee arose out of the recent Governance Review. The Nominations Committee has now been established as one of the Specialist Committees of the Board.

Functions and Responsibilities of the Nominations Committee

The Nominations Committee will recommend to the Board:

  • Additional Directors to be appointed to the Board (given the Constitutional requirement below); and
  • Appointees to fill casual vacancies on the Board if and when they should arise.

As part of the above, the Nominations Committee:

  • will evaluate the balance of skills, knowledge, experience, independence and diversity seen as appropriate to have on the Board to meet the needs of the Society, and in light of this evaluation identify any ‘gaps’ on the Board immediately subsequent to the annual general meeting that may need to be addressed by Director appointments.
  • may convene to consider any matter that the Nominations Committee has been specially tasked or delegated to consider by the Board as may be appropriate to its function.

More specifically, the Nominations Committee will recommend to the Board the appointment of up to four (4) suitable Additional Directors including two (2) Non-Psychology Directors [external] and up to two (2) Members Entitled To Hold Office pursuant to section 76 of the Constitution.

Composition of the Nominations Committee

The Committee will consist of five (5) members (including four (4) voting members) as follows:

  1. an external, independent Chair appointed by the Board who cannot be: an employee of the Society, hold a member grade of the Society (although could be eligible to hold the grade of Professional Affiliate), a current Board member nor a past Board member who has held office within the last three (3) years [at the time of issuing this call for Expressions of Interest a Chair has not been appointed]; and
  2. three (3) Honorary Fellows and/or Fellows of the Society, one from each of the Society’s Divisions, selected under the procedure set out below; and
  3. the Society’s President who will be a non-voting ex-officio member of the Committee.

Membership of APS Divisions

You have received this Call for Expressions of Interest as you are an Honorary Fellow or Fellow who is a member of one or more APS Divisions. Your membership of APS Divisions is based on the following:

  • Division of Colleges – you are a member of one or more APS Colleges;
  • Division of General Psychological Practice [DGPP] – you are registered to practise as a psychologist but are not a member of an APS College; and
  • Division of Psychological Research, Education and Training [DPRET] you are principally engaged in research, formal teaching or another scholarly undertaking in a field of psychology for, or in conjunction with, an education institution and/or research institution.

Selection procedure

After the close of the Call for Expressions of Interest, the Forums of each of the three (3) Divisions, namely the Division of Colleges, the Division of General Psychological Practice [DGPP] and the Division of Psychological Research, Education and Training [DPRET] will consider the relevant expressions of interest received and respectively submit the name of one (1) Honorary Fellow or Fellow to the Board for approval and appointment to the Nominations Committee.  The Board reserves its right to withhold its approval or withdraw its approval at any time but will not do so capriciously.

Term of membership of the Committee

Membership of the Nominations Committee will be for a term of three (3) years unless otherwise decided by the Board in its discretion.


The Constitution requires that the Board is to make all reasonable endeavours to ensure that Additional Directors are appointed within sixty (60) days after the end of each annual general meeting. The Board is seeking, therefore, to have the Nominations Committee properly constituted, in place and able to commence its work in a timely way to be able to assist the Board in its appointment of Additional Directors after the annual general meeting as required by clause 76 of the Constitution.
